Internal tank inspection for leading chemical manufacturer

Having completed the world’s first internal tank inspection late 2015, Cyberhawk was tasked with a further internal tank inspection by a leading chemical manufacturing company.

The project, carried out in North Teesside, saw Cyberhawk examine the quality of welds for the entire internal surface of the oil storage tank.

Usually this type of inspection is conducted by rope access technicians who are suspended on ropes to inspect the internal structure. UAVs were selected as the preferred method of inspection, primarily to reduce safety risks posed to personnel working at height as well as the restrictions associated with working in confined spaces.

With the added challenges of limited GPS signal inside the tank and dark conditions, Cyberhawk’s pilots had to work with an extremely high level of precision during the inspection to ensure a successful end result.

Utilising a multi-rotor UAV, Cyberhawk successfully completed the workscope delivering high resolution images which enabled the client to understand the tank’s defects. The client reported the project was carried out within budget and reported significant time savings, along with other positive feedback.
