Internal chimney inspection for oil and gas supermajor

In early 2016, Cyberhawk completed the first ever UAV internal industrial chimney inspection for one of the world’s largest oil and gas supermajors.

Carried out at one of Europe’s largest and most complex refineries, the project saw Cyberhawk utilise a drone to capture high definition images of the stack’s full external surface at a height of 100m, before creating a three dimensional model of the chimney.

The team’s experience of working within confined spaces saw Cyberhawk emerge as the preferred provider for this complex workscope.

Traditionally, internal chimney inspections require personnel to climb inside dangerous and potential chemically hazardous areas. Inspecting the chimney stack with Cyberhawk’s UAVs allowed for a quick and safe audit of the chimney, and meant that personnel were not required to physically enter the chimney to complete the inspection.

The project was carried out over the course of two days with results delivered through Cyberhawk’s asset management software, iHawk. This provided the client with accurate sizing and positioning of defects along with the provision of high definition orthophotos of each elevation of the chimney.

The successfully completion of this project represented a major leap forward for drone technology and the huge safety benefits it has to offer.
